The Panama Canal What Cruisers Need to Know for a Successful Transit in 2026 and Beyond

Crossing from one ocean to another is a milestone for any cruiser. The Panama Canal is a working global shipping system, and experience with smaller locks will not fully prepare you for it. Experience helps. Assumptions don't.

In this course, Captain Deborah Marlor, a USCG licensed captain with more than 32,000 nautical miles, takes you through the whole transit in five stages: arrive, plan, prepare, transit and explore. You'll start with cruising stops in Colombia and Caribbean Panama, including Santa Marta, Cartagena and the San Blas Islands. Then you'll move into the heart of the course: how to get your boat and crew safely from the Caribbean to the Pacific.

You'll learn how to:

Build a realistic planning window, starting three to six months before arrival
Decide whether you need an agent, and how to choose one for trust and safety, not price alone
Understand who does what: captain, agent, advisor or pilot, and line handlers
Pick good line handlers (calm and reliable beats loud and experienced)
Meet the official 2026 requirements for equipment, speed, crew and deposits
Prove your boat mechanically and rig your deck before transit day
Brief your crew and work each lockage, including center-chamber and nesting with other boats
Plan for changes, overnight stops and the differences between northbound and southbound transits
Choose your Pacific-side marina and explore Las Perlas, Coiba and the Gulf of Chiriquí

Along the way, Captain Deb shares common cruiser mistakes, her Readiness Test and her Top Five Canal Rules. The last rule matters as much as the others: remember to enjoy the experience.

Plan early. Build the right team. Prepare the boat. Brief the crew. Enjoy the crossing.
